A. Two Views of Atonement

1. Limited vs. Unlimited Atonement
·        Unlimited Atonement – Unlimited in Scope (Christ died for all) but limited in power to save (can be lost)
·        Limited Atonement – Limited in Scope (Christ died for the elect) but unlimited in power (cannot be lost)
2. Potential vs. Actual Atonement
·        Potential Atonement – Christ’s death gives man ability to save themselves
·        Actual Atonement – Christ’s death gives man assurance of salvation

3 Elements of Atonement

1. Sacrifice – What did Jesus’ death accomplish?

·        Lay down His life for the sheep (v.11, 15, 17
·        The Problem of Christianity
o   Most Christians believe in the Potential Atonement
§  Christ paid the penalty of all sins of every people – why still there will be a judgment for some
§  Hell will be populated by people redeemed by Jesus – Double Jeopardy
§  The decision will be left to man
§  Jesus’ death will be totally useless, ineffective, never accomplish anything
·        Nature of the Atonement
o    Atonement is Actual
o   Pay the Full Price of Penalty
§  God poured out His wrath to Him that supposed to be for us
§  He died our death and drank our hell
o   Sins were imputed to Him
§  Substitutionary atonement – Vicarious atonement
§  He died in our place (Isaiah 53:5,6,8c)
o   Atonement is Actual and Limited
§  The Goal of His death has been accomplished
§  Eternal life is possible (v.10:28, 10)

2. Security – Can Salvation be lost?

·        Holding to the Potential and Unlimited Atonement salvation can be lost
o   It is the decision of man is the final say and not the accomplishment of His death
·        Actual and Limited Atonement have the assurance of salvation (vv.28,29; 6:39)
·        The essential question – What is the determiner of salvation – Death of Christ or Decision of Man

3. Scope – To whom Christ died?

·        Most answer will be – Christ died for all
o   Verses that seemingly contradicts (Mark 10:45 and 1John 2:2)
·        The Determiner of to Whom Christ Died
o   Relationship in Terms of Possession (v.14, 24 )
§  My own, My Sheep – signifies relationship/ possession of Christ
§  This will introduce the sheep in verse 11 to whom Christ lay down His life and the sheep Jesus does not own in verse 26
o   Relationship in Terms of Manifestation
§  The First Manifestation is LOVE (v.14,27) the word KNOW

§  The   Manifestation is OBEDIENCE (v.27) the word HEAR, FOLLOW, (LORDSHIP)
