GRACE THROUGH FAITH COMMUNITY CHURCH
TEXT: Matthew 3:5-10
THEME: Confirmation of Jesus Being the King – the Messiah by His Herald
TITLE: The Message from the Herald (Part 2)
PROPOSTIONAL STATEMENT: THE UNREPENTANT MEN
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Review
1) Book
The Gospel according to Matthew presents Jesus as the Promised King
• Written Document (Genealogy)
• Extraofdinary Conception (Virgin Birth)
• Recognition from the King Recognizers (The Visit of Magi)
• Threat to the Throne of the Present King (The Hatred of Herod)
• The King’s Herald (The Message of the King through His Herald)
2) Review on Repentance
• The message of the Gospel is “Repent”
o Kingdom of God is holiness, righteousness and sins will not stand
o The King is holy and righteous and just
Who will repent?
• Those who acknowledge that they are sinners
• Those who know the character of God
• Those who see the value of the Kingdom of God
3) God Called People to Repent
All the books of the Bible there is a command to repent explicitely or implicitely. Repentance is volitional in nature but
• Reasons
o because of sin - man is separated from God (Isaiah 52:9a)
o because of passion for sin - man hates God and loves evil (John 3:20)
• Problem
o Man is dead in his transgressions and sin (Ephsians 2:1)
o Man has no ability to turn away from sins and turn to God (John 6:65)
• Solution
o The grace of God – Regeneration – Understanding the Gospel – Repentance
Argument : Repentance, though it is volitional but God caused it. He grants repentance to man.
II. BODY
A. The First Audience
We can tell who were the people who went out from the mentioned places in Luke 3:10-14.
1) Their Home (v.5)
• From Jerusalem (The Center of Jewish Religion)
• All Judea
• Whole Region of Jordan
2) Their Purpose
• The purpose is not mentioned in the text
• But in Matthew 11:7-9 Jesus disclosed their purpose of seeing John the Baptist
o To see the prophet because they longed for a prophet (400 years of silence without a prophet)
Implications :
John the Baptist was very popular during that time based on the three places mentioned in verse 5
The message of the Kingdom of Heaven was preached.
3) Their Response
• Confession
• Baptism of Repentance
B) The Second Audience
The message of the Lord is for those who claimed that they had repented. These are the people inside the church. Many people suffered from false assurance of salvation because they were deceived by
Who are they?
• They are not of the same belief but they were in unity when there is any threat against their beliefs
• Their Differences
o The Ritualist - The Rationalist
o Legalist - Liberals
o Believe in resurrection - Do no believe in resurrection
o Working for next life - Working in this life
o Looking of Priestly King - Looking for Political King
• But everytime there were threats against their beliefs, they join together.
• These people did not consider themselves sinners because they follow the Law of Moses.
1) Satanic Character – (Brood of Vipers)
• Their Image – Everytime they are mentioned in the Bible, the impression is that they are worst.
• John was so straight and very bold to rebuke these two influential groups so as Jesus (Matthew 23)
• Why they were called Brood of Vipers
o Venomous – Their teachings were venoumous – deceiving and deadly
Jesus warned them against the yeast of the Pharisees and saducees (Matthew 16:6)
Jesus called them blind guides (Matthew 15:14)
Jesus called them hypocrites
2) Spiritual Condition – (Who Warned You to Flee from the Coming Wrath?)
• John knew these people regarding their beliefs and practice
• They were people of hell (hell bound men)
• They were godless men who secretely enter the church (Jude)
3) Specific Command – (Produce Fruit in Keeping Repentance)
• Fruit is means their lives, being like Christ (Paul used the word “goal”
• Evidence of repentance is the fruit – a righteous life
• Evidence that you are in Christ (John 15)
Illustration : Cutterpillar turning to Butterfly
Argument : The evidence of true repentance is a growing
4) Self-Righteous Claim – (Sons of Abraham)
• They were always claiming that they were children of Abraham (John 8:33,39)
• Being son of Abrahanm iwas their basis that God was on their side.
• This claim excluded their selves from the unrighteous.
• We are also have many self-righteous claims
The statemen maybe made them mad at John : (Out of these stones, God can raise up children of Abraham) Leveling them to sinners (publicans, soldiers, crowds)
THE UNREPENTANT MAN
A. Dangerous
• They give a wrong concept of Christianity
o to other Christians especially young in faith
o to unbelievers as hindrance.
• They are destructive and deceiving
Challenge : Church called by God look at your actions someone is imitating you. There are always little feet that follows you.
B. Doomed
• This is their condition whether the serve the Lord or not the hell is still waiting for them. (Mattahew 7:22-23)
• Evaluate your spiritual life
• For those who are sure of their salvation please pray for them and do not condemn them
• Have compassion for them.
C. Deceived
• Those who are Christian today are being deceived by their claims.
• Do not justify your unholy living by your service to the Lord
• Outward righteousness is deceiving
• Inward righteousness must be seen by your outward righteousness
III. CONCLUSION
The Warning of the Lord (v10)
Do not wait for the judgement of God to you. Fear the Wrath of God that will be poured out to hell forever and ever. Maybe you cannot hear this message again but this message will eacho in your ears but you can see yourself standing on the unquencheable fire because it’s too late. There is no repentance in hell. This message is for those who are not sure of their repentance and for those who do not yet repent. Those who are not yet repenting, repent or you will feel the wrath of God in hell. And for those who are not sure of their repentance, evaluate your life if it is a life that produces fruit, a life who is folliowing the Lord Jesus. If not Repent.
For God’s Glory
