Confirmation of Jesus Being the King – the Messiah by Royal Lineage

GRACE THROUGH FAITH COMMUNITY CHURCH

TEXT: Matthew 1:1-17
THEME: Confirmation of Jesus Being the King – the Messiah by Royal Lineage
TITLE: The Geneology - Cornerstone of All the Prophecies
PROPOSTIONAL STATEMENT: The Accomplishments of Jesus Genealogy

I. ITRODUCTION
A. The Book of Matthew

1) The Author
• The name Matthew means “Gift of the Lord”
• One of the disciple who was called Levi son of Alphaeus (Mark 2:14; Luke 5:27)
• Tax Collector – publican (sinner equal to the criminals, rebels, traitors, prostitutes)
• He was called by Jesus while he was sitting at the tax booth (Matthew 9:9)
• Nowhere in the Scripture the name Matthew associated with tax collector only Levi
• In this Gospel he only mentioned his name twice. During the records of his call and when he lists all the twelve disciples.

2) The Audience
• The audience are converted Jews (Christian Jews)
• Many of the Jews did not believe Jesus as the Messiah – Their long awaited King
• Most of them though theiy were converted still had tied to the customs and rituals of the Jewish traditions (Acts 15)
• The author uses the Kingdom of Heaven rather than Kingdom of God because in Jews they avoid to mention “God”

3) The Agenda
• Kingdom of Heaven (mentioned 32 times in the Gospel according to Matthew)
• The Promised King (there are 99 OT quotations in this Gospel)
• The Gospel tells the Jewish Christian this is your King

THE KING THAT WAS REJECTED BY GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE

B. The Genealogy

1) Our Attitude Toward Geneologies in the Bible
• This is a boring parts in the Bible
• We treat these genealogies less important

2) The Importance of Geneologies for the Jews (The Book of Numbers)
• To know their homeland given by God to the 12 tribes
o Tribal Camps (Chapter 2)
o Tribal Land (Chapter 26 and 35)

• To know their roles according to their clan
o Priestly Roles (ch. 3, 4 and 5)
o Dedication for the Altar (ch. 7)

II. BODY of MESSAGE
The Gospel according to Matthew begins with the geneology. Why because it is the cornerstone of all prophecy about Jesus Christ – the Promised Messiah – The Long Awaited King.

A. The Comparison of Geneologies in Matthew and in Luke
• The Reverse Order
o In Matthew – Moving Foreward
o In Luke – Moving Backward

• The Roots
o In Matthew – root is Abraham (Royal Line)
o In Luke – root is Adam (Blood Line)

B. The Racial and Royal Line
• The Fathers
o Abraham though he was the father of faith still he was a sinner.
o David though he was God’s after own heart still he was a sinner.
• The Sons
o Isaac –
o Solomon
• The Mothers
o Tamar – pretend to be a prostitute to her father-in-law
o Rahab – prostitute of Jericho
o Ruth – a Moabite woman born out of incest
o Bathseba – an adulteress

C. The Problem and the Solution
• The Curse of Jeconiah (Jeremiah 22:30)
"Thus saith the LORD, Write this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days; for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David...." If Jesus had been the real son of Joseph, He never could have sat on the throne of David, because He would have been under the curse.

• Joseph was not the father of Jesus
o Matthew does not tell us that Joseph was the father of Jesus
o God provided a legal way where royalty will be maintained.
o Joseph was the legal father of Jesus Christ not in blood because the curse was in blood (The sons of Jeconiah)

D) The 3 Eras
Verse 17 tells that there are 42 generations and it was divided into 3 eras.

• From Theocracy to Monarchy (Abraham to David)
o The government from Abraham was Theocracy meaning God is their ruler, their King
o It is also the era of establishing a nation Israel from Abraham
• From Monarchy to Captivity (David to Jeconiah)
o During the time of David, Israel wanted to have king that will lead them so God let them to have their king and the first king was Saul
o It was also the era wherein the kingdom was divided into two, Judah and Israel and they were became captives of Babylonians
• From Captivity to Liberty (Jeconiah to Jesus)
o During the time of Jeconiah, they return to their land
o In this era also the curse in the tribe of Judah because of Jeconiah was spelled , wherein his sons will never sit on the throne of David and never rule anymore (Jeremiah 22:24-30)

E) The Accomplishments of Jesus Genealogy

1) It Confirms that Jesus is the Promised King
• Today Israel cannot trace their tribe. If we they are still waiting for the Messiah –the King how can they affirm it.

2) It Secures our Salvation
• Jesus will not bear our sins if He does not come from the Racial and Royal line of Abraham and David

3) It Gives us Idea about His Kingdom
• His Kingdom rules by grace not by law

III. CONCLUSION
Now who is Christ for you? If He is your King, do you acknowledge Him as a King in your life?

For God’s Glory
