Prescribed Dress Code

TEXT: Matthew 22:1-14

I. INTRODUCTION
  • How do we know whether a student is from ICA or GBA?
  • How do we know whether a person is a crew of Jollibee or McDonalds, or Chowking?
  • The answer is they will know according to what they are wearing
  • Schools, companies, and other institutions have their own prescribed uniforms.
  • I remember when I was in High School, the guard did not allow many students to enter the school premises because we were not in proper uniform.
  • Even having the rule "not in proper uniform, no entry, many students who were not in proper uniform tried to sneak in the class.
  • But when the guards saw them wearing not the complete uniform, they will report and handed them to the principal or teachers in order to receive sanctions of not wearing the prescribed uniform.
TITLE: "Prescribed Dress Code" - "Proper Dress Code"

II. BODY

Plot
Background
  • Jesus told three consecutive parables having the same theme
  • However, there is a sense of progression
    • First - Parable of Two Sons (The Kingdom of God comes first to the sinners than the self-righteous)
    • Second - Parable of the Tenants (The Kingdom of God has taken away from Israel and has given to Gentiles)
    • Third - Parable of the Wedding Banquet (For many are called, but few are chosen)

Scene 1 (vv2-7) Invitation Rejected
  • First Invitation Rejected
  • Second Invitation Rejected
  • The Anger of the King

Scene 2 (vv8-10) Invitation Accepted
  • The wedding feast is ready
  • The invitation was offered to the uninvited
  • The wedding hall was filled with guests

Scene 3 (vv11-12) -  Improper Dress Spotted
  • The king went in the banquet
  • He saw a man with no wedding garment
    • Easily spotted because the rest are in proper dress code

Scene 4 (v13) - Punishment Executed
  • Bind the man (hands and feet)
  • Cast him in outer darkness where weeping and gnashing of teeth are experienced

Scene 5 (v14) - Conclusion
  • For many are called, but few are chosen.
  • This parable explains Jesus's conclusion "For many are called, but few are chosen"

Explanation:
  • The word "Called"
    • The word invitation in the parable correspond to the act of calling
      • Those who rejected the invitation are the called
        • Since they are the invited, they are the Israel who rejected the Gospel
        • They persecuted the servants whom the King's had sent
      • There is another group of people who accepted the call, they are also the "Called"
        • When the invited rejected the invitation, the invitation was given to them
        • It brings back the point of the second parable (The kingdom will be given to not His people)
      • There are people who died and never had a chance to hear the Gospel
        • They are not part of the group of people who are "CALLED"
        • But to those who heard the Gospel, it is their privilege.
    • Nevertheless, the called are the people who heard the Gospel of the Kingdom of God - Gospel of salvation
    • It is a privilege to hear the Gospel of Salvation.
  • However, not all who are called will inherit the Kingdom of God, but only those who are chosen.
  • Part of those who are called (who heard the Gospel) are the chosen and not chosen.
  • This parable describes the non chosen who are called. By this the chosen out of the called will be identified as well.
Propositional Statement: The Marks of the Not Chosen out the Privileged Called People.
  1. They are those who Do not Care about Christ's Message
    • They are the invited who rejected the invitation
    • They heard the invitation, they heard the Gospel of Salvation, the Message of Christ, but they reject it.
    • These are people who have the privilege, the opportunity to hear the message of Christ, but they are not chosen
      • Their rejection of the Message of Christ proved that they are not chosen.
      • Illustration: Personal Evangelism - Many rejected the message of Christ.
Challenge: We do not know who are the chosen and not.
But, let us preach the Gospel, giving them the opportunity to hear the message of Christ.
Transition: Those who have the privilege to hear the Message of Christ, but rejected it, are the wretched people.
But there are more wretched than those who hear and rejected the Message of Christ.

  1. They are those who Do not Conform with Christ's Manner
    • They are the uninvited invited who are not in proper dress code
    • They have given the opportunity to hear the Message of Christ, to sit and to fellowship with the saints, but without repentance, no change of mind, lifestyle.
      • Christ has a divine mandate for those who truly receive Him
        •
    • They still love the thing that God hates and hate the thing that God loves (according to one preacher).
    • These are people without evidence of holiness and righteousness.
    • Here is the sad part. Many in our churches today are like the person who sat with those who accepted the invitation, but, not wearing the proper attire.
    • They are the unbelieving so-called believers, the church people without transformation, and the goats pretending to be sheep.
Challenge: If we call ourselves Christian, wear the proper dress code. May our King spot us dressed in holiness.

Now we know the marks of those who are not chosen, it is important to know they are in great danger.
If we are the one who constantly rejecting the message of Christ, or the one who claim to be a Christian, but living an unholy life,  you are the Called but not the Chosen; nevertheless, you are in great danger.

CIS:  THE NOT CHOSEN ARE IN GREAT DANGER
  • These people will experience God's judgment in the end.
  • If they are still in their rejection and sinful lifestyle when Jesus returns, they are in great danger.
    • In verse 7, to those who do not care were brought to their terrible end (destroyed)
    • In verse 13, to those who do not conform were thrown to a horrible place (weeping and gnashing)
    • These are mandates of the king.

III. CONCLUSION
  • I assume that we are not the first group of people who rejected the Message of Christ.
  • My concern most here in  our church is the issue of the second mark, "Those who do not conform with Christ's Manner"
  • If we are not in proper dress code,
  • If we are not living in holiness and righteousness, if we are still playing with the world, while confessing of being a Christian,    we are more likely called but not chosen.
  • And we are in great danger of the coming judgment ready to be served at the coming of Jesus Christ.
  • Let us all wear the prescribed dress code as a Christian, the robe of holiness and righteousness.

I. INTRODUCTION
      - Welcome to MBST. It is a wonderful beginning of school year 2017-18.
  • My life as a former seminary student in MBST
  • MBST is a training ground to equip the servants of God
  • MBST is also the battleground where the devil makes the temptation to creep in
  • It is a must to overcome the temptation.

Title: Overcoming Temptation

II. BODY
Background
  • Chapters 3 and 4 are all about the preparation of Jesus's ministry
    • John the Baptizer is the one who cries out in the wilderness who prepares the way of the Lord-Jesus
    • Jesus' baptism inaugurates his earthly ministry
    • The voice of the Father "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased" is a proclamation that Jesus is the Son of God
    • Matthew used the idea of Jesus being the Son of God in the next passage which is the Temptation of Jesus

Scene 1: Leading to Wilderness
  • The Spirit was the one led Jesus in the wilderness
    • In John Stott book, The Incomparable Christ, he emphasized that the gospel of Matthew is the gospel of fulfillment.
      • Fulfillment of prophecies, law and Israel
      • Jesus is the antitype of Israel - Israel is just the shadow of the one who will fulfill that they failed to do.
      • In baptism of Jesus, the word "SON" is emphasized there. God called Israel, son because of being the type of Jesus
        • Matthew 2:15 is a quote from Hosea 11:1 "Out of Egypt I called my son."
    • The point is that Jesus was led into the wilderness as Israel experienced the life there in the wilderness.
  • The Purpose of Leading in the wilderness
    • To be tempted by the devil
      • The Greek word of "to tempt" is peirazw which also means to test.
      • God does not tempt His people, but He does test them.
        • To test is to reveal what the person is and not make the person who he is
          • Testing cannot change the fake gold to genuine gold or a genuine gold to fake gold, rather to prove the real identity.
      • On contrary, the devil does not test God's people, rather, he does the tempting.
        • To tempt is to drag the person through his lustful desires in order to commit sin.
      • Conclusion: In a single event, God test the person on one hand, and the devil tempt the person on the other hand.
        • What had happened to Job is a test - God proved who Job was. On the other hand, Satan tempted him.
    • This is the same thing that happened to Israel in wilderness and to Jesus in this passage.

Scene 2 - The Temptation
  • This scene is right after forty days and forty nights of fasting.
    • Jesus was so hungry and weak

3 General Temptations of the Enemy

1. Turn the Stones to Loaves of Bread (v3)
  • The reply of Jesus is a quote from Deuteronomy 8:3 pertaining to "Manna," which is found in Exodus 16:1-36
    • Man shall not live by bread alone but from every word that comes from the mouth of God
  • Temptation: Doing things based on his own will rather God's will
  • Purpose of Temptation: Satan wants Jesus disobey God's word
  • We trust our capability than God's word
    • That's why we sin because we did something that we are capable of, but not according to His word
    • Remember that apart from Jesus we can do nothing, we  cannot bear fruit, nor please God.
Challenge: Let us do our ministry according to God's word.
Main Point: To do according to our ability is disobey the word of God
Transition: The devil found out that Jesus trust the Word of God so the next temptation

2. Throw Yourself Down ….He will command his angels concerning you.
  • The quotation of Satan from Psalm 91:11-12 (God is the refuge and the fortress)
  • The reply of Jesus is a quote from Deuteronomy 6:16 pertaining to the event at "Massah," which is found in Exodus 17:1-7
    • You shall not put the Lord your God to the test if God is on your side or not.
  • Temptation: Putting God on a test by obliging God to Act
  • Purpose of Temptation: Satan wants Jesus to distrust God.
  • We put God into obligation to prove of His being God is to distrust God
    • I remember Bro. Eddie Villanueva during his campaign for presidency the second time around in 2010.
      •
    • Prosperity preachers and other so called Christians put God into test, obliging God to make them wealthy so that others may come tot their church.
    • Healing and other performance in the church to prove that God is in their church.
    • I am so upset with the testimony of those people who became wealthy when they get into church. How about the poor Christians mentioned in the book of James? Is God away from them because they were poor?
  • God can make you wealth, make your business blooms, make you healed, but the testimony that we should testify is the testimony of apostles, martyrs, John Newton, wherein once they were blind and lost but now can see and found. The change inwardly because of the grace given to them from sinners to saints.
  • Read the BEATITUDES if you find one that God the blessed.
Challenge: Let us not put God in to a test to prove His being as God.
Main Point: To put God to a test, is to distrust the being of God
Transition: Satan was not able to make Jesus to commit sin, what he did is to

3. Worship Me….I will give you all the kingdoms of the world
  • The reply of Jesus is quoted from Deuteronomy 6:13
    • You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve
  • Temptation: Allurement of Kingdoms of all the Earth the easy way
  • Purpose of Temptation: Satan wants Jesus to dishonor God
    • All kingdoms will be given to Jesus. Any authorities. But he must suffer first
    • Satan allures him of the kingdoms of the world in easy way without suffering just to commit idolatry.
  • Many Christian are allured by worldly desires
    • Many pastors went out of the ministry because their needs are not met.
    • There are pastors stay in the ministry because ministry for them is an opportunity to be prosperous.
Challenge: Let us consider the ministry as a privilege to worship God and not an opportunity of fulfilling the worldly desires.
Main Point: To give in what Satan offers is to dishonor God

CIS: TO BE AWARE GOD IS TO BE AWARE OF DEVIL'S SNARE

III. CONCLUSION

We are all ministers here. Remember that temptations are everywhere. Beware of the devil's scheme. The devil will tempt us to disobey, to distrust, to dishonor God using different kinds of temptations. Let us be aware of God by obeying, trusting, and honoring God in order to stand against the devil's snare

TEXT: Matthew 21:33-46

I. INTRODUCTION
In 2016 Ms. Columbia was announced to be the Miss Universe. However, a few minute after the proclamation, after Miss Columbia received the crown and the title, the MC announced that there was something wrong about the proclamation of winner. It was Miss Philippines and not Ms. Columbia won the title, Miss Universe. So the title took away from Ms. Columbia and gave it to Ms. Philippine as a new Miss Universe.

II. BODY
Background
  • The Matthew was written for Jewish Christians.
  • Jesus is almost at the end of His earthly ministry
  • There are three consecutive parables that talks about the former and later recipient of the Kingdom of God
  • The first parable about the two sons is about the one who claim to be God' people, rich in spirit, right with God and the people who are sinners, poor in spirit.
  • The word of "another" means another of the same kind.
  • There's a continuity of idea here in this second parable.

Plot

The Contract (v33)
  • Lease: it is a contract or agreement that the lessee will pay the lessor (the owner) for using the property.
  • The Owner Prepared the Property
    • Master of a house planted a vineyard
    • He put a fence around
    • Dug a winepress in it
    • Built a tower
  • Part of the contract is that the owner will get his share as payment for using the property.

The Cruelty (vv34-39)
  • Summoning of the Servants
    • First Group
      • The cruelty of the Tenants (beat one, killed another, stoned another)
    • Second Group of Servants
      • They did the same cruelty
  • Summoning the Son
    • Expectation: They will respect my son
    • Extermination
      • They know the son is the one who is coming
      • They conspire against the son
        • Action: They want to get rid of the heir of the property.
        • Aim: They want the inheritance
      • They took him; They threw him out of the vineyard; and They killed him
  • That's how the parable ended, but there's a continuation

The Cross-Examination (vv40-41)
  • Jesus asked the His hearers (chief priests and the elders 21:23)
  • Question: When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?
  • Reply:
    •  He will put those WRETCHES to a MISERABLE DEATH
    • And will LET OUT the vineyard to OTHER TENANTS

The Conclusion (vv42-44)
  • Quotation from Psalm 118:22-23
    • The STONE that the BUILDERS REJECTED has become CORNERSTONE
  • Conclusion: The Kingdom will be taken from you and given to a people producing fruits
    • This is not about salvation being lost
    • This is a prophesy
    • This is about all about Israel (the recipient of God's revelation), but the Kingdom will be taken from them and will be given to the other who will produce fruits
      • These are the GENTILE BELIEVERS
      • The Grafting will soon to come and it is now - We are grafted
      • Romans 9:30-32; 10:21; 11:11-12; 25

  • Israel is the chosen nation by God to demonstrate His glory, His revelation, His promise, His government, everything - Kingdom
  • However, Israel is continuously rejecting God.
    • The stories in the OT prove Israel's rejection of God
      • Idolatries - Injustices - Unrighteousness
      • God sent His prophets as the owner of the vineyard sent his servants, but they killed them.
    • God sent the His Son - The owner sent his son
      • The Son is the last one that the Father has sent to Israel
      • But when Jesus was sent, He was rejected and killed by Israel - as the tenants killed the owner's son

The Confusion (vv45-46)
  • The Pharisees knows that Jesus is talking about them.
  • They are so angry to Jesus because of what Jesus had told them in parable
  • They want to get rid of Jesus, but they could not able because the people's belief that Jesus is a prophet

Israel Rejected the Last Person that the Father has sent for them to listen

The 2 Results of Israel's Rejection of Jesus Christ

1. The Transfer of God's Reign
  • The Kingdom of God will be taken away from Israel to give it to the Gentiles
    • Prophesies
      • Hos 2:23 "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people……"
    • Act 1:6 "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"
      • They are waiting for the restoration of the kingdom to Israel
        • When they rejected Jesus, they know that the Kingdom was taken away from Israel
      • But that's just the beginning of taking away the Kingdom to Israel
      • It is a sad moment for Israel, but a celebration for the Gentiles
    • Paul's Understanding of Transfer of God's reign
      • Rom 1:16 "….to the Jews first then to the Greeks"
      • Rom 11:11 "…..Rather through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles"
    • Covenant
      • Gen 12:3 "...and in you (Abraham) all the families of the earth will be blessed."
        • From Abraham Israel was born, from Israel Jesus was born
          • Gentiles has been blessed because of Abraham because from him comes out Israel and from Israel comes out Christ
          • Through Israel the Gentiles has been blessed
            • Jesus is the blessing for the Gentiles because Israel rejected Him
  • God has given the Kingdom to Gentiles so that it will grow-multiply
    • Unbelief of Israel will not make the Kingdom of God multiply
      • How can Israel produce the fruit of the Kingdom if they reject the King of the Kingdom?
    • Faith in Christ whom the Israel rejected is what makes the Kingdom of God grow
Challenge:
  • We are beneficiaries of the Transfer of God's reign.
  • The Kingdom was given to us.
  • Do you think through you, the Kingdom of God grow?
  • Let us all multiply the Kingdom of God. Advance the Kingdom of God. Let us makes disciples. Let us live in righteousness

2. The Tragedy of the God's Rejecters
  • The Kingdom will be taken from Israel
    • It is a tragedy for Israel as the chosen nation to whom the Kingdom of God was entrusted.
    • Illustration: It is a tragedy for a consistent honor for 1st to 3rd quarter and expecting to receive the highest honor but was not able.
    • The reply to Jesus question about what the owner will do with the tenants for killing his son is a tragedy
  • Verse 44 express the tragedy of those who will reject Jesus
    • And the one who falls on that stone (Jesus-the stone they rejected) will be broken into pieces
      • Illustration: What happen to a rock climber when he got fall? - death
    • And when it falls to anyone, it will crush him
      • Illustration: What happen if beam fell on someone during the earthquake - death
Challenge:
  • It is a reminder that there is a great destruction that awaits to those who keep on rejecting Christ.
  • To those who still rejecting Christ today, the parable of Jesus illustrate a sad truth that there is destruction that awaits
    • Jesus is the stone -
      • He is invincible and everyone against Him will suffer great destruction forever in hell
      • He is Lord whether you believe or reject Him
  • Come to Jesus, received Him, acknowledge Him, put your trust in Him
  • He will be a stone who will protect you - the Ebenezer
  • Or He will be a stone who will destroy you
  • He is the cornerstone - His strength will never quenched

CIS: The Rejected Christ is our Salvation

III. CONCLUSION
  • My friends, now we know that the Kingdom of God was transferred from Israel to us
  • Are you going to reject Him and experience the tragedy of soul?
  • Do not reject Him, today is the day of salvation
  • They rejected Jesus Christ, but let us acknowledge and put our trust in Him
  • He is the rejected Christ, our Salvation
