TEXT: Matthew 21:33-46
I. INTRODUCTION
In 2016 Ms. Columbia was announced to be the Miss Universe. However, a few minute after the proclamation, after Miss Columbia received the crown and the title, the MC announced that there was something wrong about the proclamation of winner. It was Miss Philippines and not Ms. Columbia won the title, Miss Universe. So the title took away from Ms. Columbia and gave it to Ms. Philippine as a new Miss Universe.
II. BODY
Background
- The Matthew was written for Jewish Christians.
- Jesus is almost at the end of His earthly ministry
- There are three consecutive parables that talks about the former and later recipient of the Kingdom of God
- The first parable about the two sons is about the one who claim to be God' people, rich in spirit, right with God and the people who are sinners, poor in spirit.
- The word of "another" means another of the same kind.
- There's a continuity of idea here in this second parable.
Plot
The Contract (v33)
- Lease: it is a contract or agreement that the lessee will pay the lessor (the owner) for using the property.
- The Owner Prepared the Property
- Master of a house planted a vineyard
- He put a fence around
- Dug a winepress in it
- Built a tower
- Part of the contract is that the owner will get his share as payment for using the property.
The Cruelty (vv34-39)
- Summoning of the Servants
- First Group
- The cruelty of the Tenants (beat one, killed another, stoned another)
- Second Group of Servants
- They did the same cruelty
- Summoning the Son
- Expectation: They will respect my son
- Extermination
- They know the son is the one who is coming
- They conspire against the son
- Action: They want to get rid of the heir of the property.
- Aim: They want the inheritance
- They took him; They threw him out of the vineyard; and They killed him
- That's how the parable ended, but there's a continuation
The Cross-Examination (vv40-41)
- Jesus asked the His hearers (chief priests and the elders 21:23)
- Question: When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?
- Reply:
- He will put those WRETCHES to a MISERABLE DEATH
- And will LET OUT the vineyard to OTHER TENANTS
The Conclusion (vv42-44)
- Quotation from Psalm 118:22-23
- The STONE that the BUILDERS REJECTED has become CORNERSTONE
- Conclusion: The Kingdom will be taken from you and given to a people producing fruits
- This is not about salvation being lost
- This is a prophesy
- This is about all about Israel (the recipient of God's revelation), but the Kingdom will be taken from them and will be given to the other who will produce fruits
- These are the GENTILE BELIEVERS
- The Grafting will soon to come and it is now - We are grafted
- Romans 9:30-32; 10:21; 11:11-12; 25
- Israel is the chosen nation by God to demonstrate His glory, His revelation, His promise, His government, everything - Kingdom
- However, Israel is continuously rejecting God.
- The stories in the OT prove Israel's rejection of God
- Idolatries - Injustices - Unrighteousness
- God sent His prophets as the owner of the vineyard sent his servants, but they killed them.
- God sent the His Son - The owner sent his son
- The Son is the last one that the Father has sent to Israel
- But when Jesus was sent, He was rejected and killed by Israel - as the tenants killed the owner's son
The Confusion (vv45-46)
- The Pharisees knows that Jesus is talking about them.
- They are so angry to Jesus because of what Jesus had told them in parable
- They want to get rid of Jesus, but they could not able because the people's belief that Jesus is a prophet
Israel Rejected the Last Person that the Father has sent for them to listen
The 2 Results of Israel's Rejection of Jesus Christ
1. The Transfer of God's Reign
- The Kingdom of God will be taken away from Israel to give it to the Gentiles
- Prophesies
- Hos 2:23 "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people……"
- Act 1:6 "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?"
- They are waiting for the restoration of the kingdom to Israel
- When they rejected Jesus, they know that the Kingdom was taken away from Israel
- But that's just the beginning of taking away the Kingdom to Israel
- It is a sad moment for Israel, but a celebration for the Gentiles
- Paul's Understanding of Transfer of God's reign
- Covenant
- Gen 12:3 "...and in you (Abraham) all the families of the earth will be blessed."
- From Abraham Israel was born, from Israel Jesus was born
- Gentiles has been blessed because of Abraham because from him comes out Israel and from Israel comes out Christ
- Through Israel the Gentiles has been blessed
- Jesus is the blessing for the Gentiles because Israel rejected Him
- God has given the Kingdom to Gentiles so that it will grow-multiply
- Unbelief of Israel will not make the Kingdom of God multiply
- How can Israel produce the fruit of the Kingdom if they reject the King of the Kingdom?
- Faith in Christ whom the Israel rejected is what makes the Kingdom of God grow
Challenge:
- We are beneficiaries of the Transfer of God's reign.
- The Kingdom was given to us.
- Do you think through you, the Kingdom of God grow?
- Let us all multiply the Kingdom of God. Advance the Kingdom of God. Let us makes disciples. Let us live in righteousness
2. The Tragedy of the God's Rejecters
- The Kingdom will be taken from Israel
- It is a tragedy for Israel as the chosen nation to whom the Kingdom of God was entrusted.
- Illustration: It is a tragedy for a consistent honor for 1st to 3rd quarter and expecting to receive the highest honor but was not able.
- The reply to Jesus question about what the owner will do with the tenants for killing his son is a tragedy
- Verse 44 express the tragedy of those who will reject Jesus
- And the one who falls on that stone (Jesus-the stone they rejected) will be broken into pieces
- Illustration: What happen to a rock climber when he got fall? - death
- And when it falls to anyone, it will crush him
- Illustration: What happen if beam fell on someone during the earthquake - death
Challenge:
- It is a reminder that there is a great destruction that awaits to those who keep on rejecting Christ.
- To those who still rejecting Christ today, the parable of Jesus illustrate a sad truth that there is destruction that awaits
- Jesus is the stone -
- He is invincible and everyone against Him will suffer great destruction forever in hell
- He is Lord whether you believe or reject Him
- Come to Jesus, received Him, acknowledge Him, put your trust in Him
- He will be a stone who will protect you - the Ebenezer
- Or He will be a stone who will destroy you
- He is the cornerstone - His strength will never quenched
CIS: The Rejected Christ is our Salvation
