The Debtor with Debtors

TEXT: Matthew 18:21-35

I. INTRODUCTION

• One of the Filipino problems is "DEBT"
• This is one cause of a quarrel
• This is also a cause of killing like what had happened in Resort World (Casino) almost 3 months ago
• What will you do if you have debt that you can't pay?
• People will hide from their debtors.

Today's message is about a man who has a big amount of debt

II. BODY

BACKGROUND

• Jesus tells how to deal with sin - church discipline (vv15-20)
• Show forgiveness to a brother who confesses his sins

• Peter's question how many times to forgive others

PLOT

The Settlement of Accounts (vv23-24)

• The king wants his servants to pay their debts to him
• There is one servant summoned to him who owed ten thousand talents
• Ten thousand talents is equal millions of dollars

Incapability to Pay the Debt (v25)

• Selling all family members
• Selling all the possessions

The Merciful King (vv26-27)

• The servant beg the king to have patience with him
• The servant is willing to pay his all his debt
• He promised that he will do everything to pay his debt

• Out of pity, the master cancelled the servant's debt

The Unmerciful Servant (vv28-30)

• The servant whose debt was cancelled saw his fellow servant who owed him 100 denarii (P30,000)

• He seized and choke his debtor
• He forced him to pay his debt

• His debtor beg him like what he did before the king
• He refused and put him in prison until he should pay the debt
• How could the debtor pay his debt if he will be put into prison?

The Wrathful King (vv31-34)

• The concerned citizens
• They witnessed what had happened
• They were distressed (probably they witnessed the cancellation of debt as well)
• They reported to their king

• The king's words of reprimanding
• He called his servant WICKED
• The servant received mercy and yet he is so unmerciful with others

• The king's command
• He put him into prison until he paid the ten thousand talents

Jesus' Conclusion (v35)

• So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother "from your heart"
• What was the King did to his unforgiving servant that our God the Father will do also to unforgiving people?

CIT: HELL IS WAITING FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT FORGIVE OTHERS WHOLEHEARTEDLY.

•  If one of you will not forgive his brother from your heart, the prison in hell awaits you
• How can a person pay all his debt if he will be put into prison?
• How can a person in hell pay all his debt?
• Hell is the place where there is no chance for the forgiveness of sin, no chance to utter confession of sins even to think to confess that will lead to repentance because of great pain and suffering.
• You will be in great suffering and anguish in hell if you do not forgive from your heart those people who hurt you.

2 Attributes of God to remember in order to forgive others with all our hearts

1. Let us think about that that God is a merciful God who grants us forgiveness of our sins against Him.

• We all have sins against God
• We cannot pay God in just doing good works that's why He forgives our sins
• Since we could not pay him, His Son paid the full price of our sins so that forgiveness will be possible.
• Jesus' suffering and death paid the full price

• Do you confess your sins to God and ask for forgiveness?
• Do you believe 1John 1:9?
• If you do, you must forgive others
• How dare you if you go to your prayer and ask God for forgiveness without forgiving other people.
• This is my advise to you:
•  Do not pray to God and do confess your sin and do not ask for forgiveness unless you forgive others
• Instead pray to God that He may grant you a forgiving heart so that you will forgive the person who did the most wicked thing to you
• Remember the Beatitude: Blessed are those who are merciful for they will receive mercy

2. Let us think about that God is a wrathful God who will throw every unforgiving person to the place of torment.

• Hell is for the unforgiving people
• There is no mercy to those who will not show mercy
• Hell is for those who is angry to other people.
• Hell is for those who think about their ego being hurt, but never consider the command to forgive
• Hell is for those who justify their unforgiving hearts those who hurt them.
• Do you think God will forgive you if you will not forgive others?
• I tell you He will not forgive you if you will not forgive others...this is what the parable is telling us.
• There is no forgiveness to those who do not forgive others
• God will not give forgiveness to the unforgiving people, only hell will be given.

• The unforgiving heart is the heart of the unbelievers
• If you don’t forgive others you are not a Christian because a Christian
• Has been forgiven and will forgive others
• Has the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the spirit is love for God and others
• Has Christ who strengthens him in order to do all things including to forgive others
• Has faith to obey the commands of the Christ including to forgive others

• Why can't you forgive others? Are you really Christians? Do not deceive yourselves?
• Brothers and Sisters, If you are Christian forgive those who hurt you wholeheartedly
• Hell is a place for unforgiving people.
•  

III. CONCLUSION

• If you are a disciples of Christ, you must deny yourselves
• Forget your ego and do the command to forgive others.
• Your life is not all about you but all about Him

• Do you still feel the pain that others brought to you, forgive them or else there is a kind of pain hat is billion times painful and it will be experienced in hell forever.
• I implore you today, FORGIVE THEM WHO HURT YOU WITH YOUR WHOLE HEART.
