Ministries of the King

GRACE THROUGH FAITH COMMUNITY CHURCH

TEXT: Matthew 4:23-25
THEME: The Activity of the King
TITLE: Ministries of the King
PROPOSTIONAL STATEMENT: Reason Why He Served in His Ministry

I. INTRODUCTION
A. The Text is the Summary of Jesus’ Ministry
o The last 3 years of Jesus life was dedicated to the ministry.
o And this ministry sets as a pattern for the church how to minister – From Apostolic Era up to our present day
o This ministry is the inauguration of the great commission
o For evangelism, mission, equipping, and sending for the advancement of God’s Kingdom

II. BODY
1) The Place of Jesus’ Ministry
Verse 23 presents the summary of Jesus’ ministry throughout Galilee
o Chapater 5, 6,and 7 are all about Jesus’ teachings
o Chapter 8 and 9 most are all about healing
• This is the summation of the Activity of the King
• And His action is to light the dark world – those who are living in darkness and living in the shadow of death (v.16)
• And according to the prophecy (Isaiah 9:1-2) Jesus is the most awaited Great Light
• And Jesus conveyed His attribute of being a Light of the World
• And He began His ministry as Light of the World in Galilee – theway to the sea, along the Jordan, the Galilee of the Gentiles
Emphasis: Misconception about Christ in respect with the place Galilee
• Many Jews did especially Pharisees and Saducees did not believe Jesus as the Christ
• Verses: John 1:46 ; 7:41, 52
• They knew that Christ will come out in David’s hometown (Bethlehem) but they failed to know that Galilee will be blessed because the Great Light (Jesus Christ) will come to Galilee to give light to the people living in darkness.
• We believe Jesus did not come out of Galilee, He went there (historically) to fulfill the prophesy in Isaiah 9:1-2

2) The Program of Jesus’ Ministry
• The program pertains to the three verbs in verse 23
• Teaching, Preaching and Healing
• These two can be categorized into two : Teaching and Preaching-Word & Healing-Work
• The Difference Between Teaching and Preaching
o Preaching and Teaching are Inseperable
o Their difference is about the purpose
 Preaching is to proclaiming the Gospel –The Kingdom of God to those who do not hear yet
 Teaching is the explanation of what the Scripture is saying in relation to the present
A. Teaching in Their Synagogues
• The text emphasizes the action as well as the place where (synagogues)
• Jesus taught in the synagogues
• Jesus taught in the synagogues and also preached (Mark 1:21, 39)
• Every town in Israel there is a synagogue-this is where the people spend the Sabbath.
• The author emphasizes the place where the action is being done (teaching) – Luke 4:16 (capture their attention)
• Teaching is relating the Word of God in our daily living in our Chritian lives. More on equipping. (Matthew 28:20; Titus 2)
• Teaching is for those who knows and want to know more about God and His revelation
o Telling us how live life worthy of God
o Telling us how we behave that God may be glorified
o Telling us how to respond to the revelation of God as we study or hear the good news
• The Importance of Teaching
o To preserve the original meaning of the Scripture
o To present the exact meaning of the Scripture in relation in our days

B. Preaching the Good News of the Kingdom
• The text emphasizes the content of the preaching and it is all about the Good News about the Kingdom
• Good News and Gospel have the same meaning
• Most of Jesus’ parables pertain to the Kingdom of God - “the Kingdom of God is like …….”
o a man who sowed good seed in the field (sovereign election of God)
o a mustard seed ; a yeast (influence of God)
o treasure hidden in the field ; like a merchant looking for fine pearls (revelation of God)
o net that was let down in the lake (justice of God)
o landowner who went out early in the morning to hire men (generousity of God)
o a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son (the wrath of God)
o ten virgins (the warning of God)
• The good news of the kingdom is there is a King who will work and rule for the sake of His people
• It gives us assurance of our salvation. It gives us assurance that we are the sons of the Kingdom
• The Good News of the Kingdom is only for those who
o know that they are living in the shadow of death
o know that they are in darkness
o acknowledge that they offended the King, rebelled against Him
o acknowledge that they are the vilest among the vile, the worst sinners among the sinners
o acknowledge that the wrath of God is on them and they will be eternally separated from God and suffered in hell forever and ever and ever and ever.
• If you do know know these things there is Good News of the Kingdom for you
• The Gospel is foolishness to those who are perishing but to those who believe it is the power of God

C. Healing Every Disease and Sickness
• The verse claims that Jesus healed every diseases and sickness
• One of the Atheist’s attack against Christ is about healing – Why didn’t Jesus heal amputees?
• Healing
o Jesus heals various diseases
 He healed caused by nature
 He healed caused by demon
 He healed caused by biological factors
 He healed caused by sinful lifestyle
o Jesus heals various people
 A demon-possessed from Decapolis - Mark 5:20
 Greek (Syrophonecian) - Mark 7:26
 Centurion’s servant – Matthew 8:5-13
Insight : The Healing done by Lord Jesus Christ is complete and immediate

4) The Purpose of Jesus’ Ministry
 There is only one purpose and it is to reveal Himself as the Promised King –
 He was the one whom the prophets prophesied
 It is not only to know Him as healier, as preacher, as teacher but to reveal Himself as the promised King
 Yes, He direcltly told in the Bible that He is the “I am” , Before Abraham He was –
 He wanted to tell the people that He was the one they were waiting for
 His ministry introduced Him as the promised King. As the promised Messiah told by the prophets
 Proof Texts
o Matthew 11:2-5 – Jesus did not say “YES – I AM” but His response was all about His ministry
o John 10:24-25 , 37-38

III. CONCLUSION
Reason Why Jesus Served Because He is Man
 Man is born to serve for the glory of God – The original man (not the sinful man) is the servant of God And Jesus did it
o Philippians 2:6-7 taking the very nature of a servant
o Ecclesiastes 12:13 – The whole of man (duty)

CHALLENGE : SERVE THE LORD BECAUSE YOU ARE MAN – SERVE LIKE JESUS
