I. INTRODUCTION
A. TV Show about a dog and its Master.
B. Sins are everywhere. You cannot escape ffrom them.
• Hermit
II. BODY
Why Did the Bible Tell This Private Experience of our Lord Jesus?
A. PURPOSE (v.1)
“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil”
• The purpose of why the Spirit led Jesus Christ into the desert was to be tempted by the devil
1st Problem – Jesus taught us to pray to the Father “lead us not into temptation…” (Matt. 6:13)
Question : Does God tempt anyone? Or does God test anyone?
• All of us will answer God never tempt anyone but He does test. God tests, Satan tempts.
Argumentation : The word temptation has a negative moral meaning while the word test has a positive moral meaning
Studying the Word (Temptation)
when he was tested,πειραζόμενοςpeirazomenos3985to make proof of, to attempt, test, temptfrom peira (Hebrew 11:17)
"I am being temptedπειράζομαιpeirazomai3985to make proof of, to attempt, test, temptfrom peira
In Greek the word test and temptation are just one word (peirasmos) – It is a neutral word. It can be positive and and negative or both positive and negative depends on the context.
In James 1:13 it is in negative sense, Satan tempts us to solicit sins
In Hebrews 11:17 it is positive sense to prove something (faith)
The temptation of Jesus is both testing and tempting. Testing in a sense to proclaim that He is the Anointed One (Baptism) and God use the temptation made by Satan to prove Jesus’ peccability and purity and being qualified as a sacrifice (baptism)
Principle : Test can lead someone to blessing, temptation can lead someone to sin
Test became temptation when someone is dragged away and enticed by his own evil deisre (James 1:14)
Answer : (Matthew 6:13) In prayer we ask the Lord not to lead us into temptation (lead us not to be drag away or entice)
Question : How do we know if it is test or temptation?
Answer : We can know only if that is a test or not after the result : James 1:12 and 14
2nd Problem – Was the temptation of Jesus real?
Many people focused on divinity. Jesus is fully human and fully God. – He clothed Himself with frail humanity
(Hebrew 2:18 and 14:15)
B. PREPARATION (v.2)
Jesus was prepared – fasting and praying
Length of time (40 days and 40 nights)
He was tempted for forty days (Luke 4:2) but the temptations that ware mentioned in chapterIV
C. PRESSURE
1st Temptation (v.3-4)
Satan’s Scheme:
• He uses the circumstance – “You are hungry”
• He provokes Jesus to turn the stones into bread.
• Turning the stones into bread is not sin – He has the right to eat (He fasted for 40 days and nights)
“If You are the Son of God..”
The word if – Satan knew that Jesus Christ is the Son of God – he tried to give doubts
Who is Jesus? and what is His condition?– Son of God – Hungry ( Hungry Son of God)
• Satan provoked Jesus Christ to use His right and power as the Son of God to satisfy His own body.
• Satan tempted Jesus to distrust His Father
Principle : Our needs will be used by Satan to awaken our full potential to do something away from the Father’s will.
Illustration: One person in the Bible study before.
Principle : Satisfying our own desires according to our own way and not the way of the Lord is a sin.
“Let the Lord satisfies our needs by putting our trust with Him.
Jesus Response:
• Jesus trusts His Father by trusting the Word of God.
• How did He show His trust to the Father – Prioritizing the Word of God
• Satan will never make Jesus distrust His Father.
2nd Temptation (5:7)
Satan’s Scheme
• He quote a passage from the Old Testament (Psalm 92:11-12)
• He used the Word of God to tempt using wrong interpretation of it (Genesis 3:4)
• He tempted Jesus by using the Word of God to pressure the Hands of God.
Jesus Response
• He used other verse from the Old Testament. (Deut. 6:16)
• Jesus attacked the misuse of the Bible.
Illustration : Many Christians put God into test .
1) Misuse of the Word (Mark 16:17-18) – Many church leaders in one church in America hunt for snake
2) Having relationship with unbeliever.
3RD Temptation (8-9)
Satan’s Scheme
• the true color of Satan. True intention Worship … ) one of satan’s sin – I will be like the Most High ----(worship)
• He offered the kingdoms of this world. –
Jesus’ Response
• Exclusivity Worship the Lord and serve the Lord. (Deut. 6:13)
D. PRIZE (11)
Victory over sin.
